そしてもう一つ忘れてはならないのが、1番に座る大谷翔平の存在だ。彼は今日、直接的な打点やホームランは挙げていない。しかし、大谷が先頭にいるという「絶対的な前提」が、ロイヤルズの投手陣のプランを根底から歪ませていた。10回裏のタイブレーク。ロイヤルズの抑え、エルセグは、大谷とフリーマンのいる上位打線を警戒しすぎるあまり、バッテリーの配球が極度に慎重にならざるを得なかった。結果として一死満塁となり、5番のマックス・マンシーと勝負しなければならなくなる。マンシーは、その「逃げ場のないプレッシャー」を背負った投手の球を見事にセンターへ弾き返し、サヨナラ勝ちを決めた。大谷が打たなくても、彼の「影」が相手を追い詰め、最後はチームの総合力でトドメを刺す。
5-4の延長サヨナラ勝ち。これは、ただの1勝ではない。若き才能のエラーという「通過儀礼」を、ベテランの意地とチームの基本への徹底で乗り越えた、非常に美しく、人間臭いドラマだった。野球は失敗のスポーツだ。だが、その失敗を全員でカバーし合えた時、そのチームは本当の意味で「王者」となる。今日のドジャースの戦いぶりは、まさにその王者の風格に満ちていた。
