This is where the story of Carsten Charles Sabathia Jr.—the boy who would become the "Monster"—began. Large, overripe grapefruits lay scattered on the ground. The young CC would gather them and fix his eyes on a single, weathered metal folding chair in his grandmother Ella Rufus’s backyard. That chair was his "strike zone."

Each time the metal chair rang out with a dull, satisfying thud, the boy grew more certain of the "extraordinary gift" in his left arm. This humble ritual was the true origin of a southpaw who would rewrite the record books of Major League Baseball. When young CC considered taking a job at Marine World, his grandmother Ella famously interjected, "Don't you worry about a job. You focus on baseball," pushing him back into his sacred circle.
