クレビンジャーの6球目。アブレイユのバットが、恐ろしいほどのヘッドスピードで空気を切り裂く。打った瞬間にそれと分かる打球が、大歓声に吸い込まれるようにライトスタンドへ突き刺さった。逆転のツーランホームラン。本日2本目のアーチは、前半のエラーによる絶望をすべて吹き飛ばす、まさに救済の放物線だった。たった2本のヒットと1つの内野ゴロで、4点を奪い取る。これぞ、繋がる打線の恐ろしさである。
そこからのレッドソックス・ブルペンは難攻不落だった。ワトソン、ウィットロック、そして最後は威圧感たっぷりのアロルディス・チャプマンがレイズの息の根を止めた。終わってみれば、レッドソックスは相手の10安打を大きく下回る6安打しか打っていない。エラーも2つ記録した。それでも勝ったのだ。自らのミスによる失血を、戦術的な「噛み合わせ」と、ワンチャンスを「線」にして仕留める精神力で覆した、あまりにもドラマチックな2時間44分。フェンウェイ・パークの緑のモンスターは、底知れぬ強さを見せつけたホームチームを、静かに讃えていた。
