日曜の朝、まだ少し眠気の残るアリゾナのチェイス・フィールド。36,405人の観客は、自分たちの絶対的エース、防御率2.93のマイク・ソロカが、いつも通りに涼しい顔で相手打線を封じ込めるものだと信じていた。だが、ベースボールというスポーツは、我々の予想をあざ笑うかのように、時として極めてグロテスクで残酷なシナリオを提示してくる。ソロカは打たれたのではない。「完全に解体」されたのだ。
イニングの合間、私は重苦しい気分を紛らわすためにスマートフォンを開いた。すると、またしてもあの過激なネット広告が目に飛び込んできた。『初体験が撮影…処女でセクシー女優への決断 ABEMA』。およそ日曜の朝の野球観戦には相応しくない刺激的な見出しだ。しかし、この「全くの無防備な状態（処女）で、何万もの冷酷な視線が注がれる過酷な舞台に放り出され、すべてを暴かれる恐怖」というメタファーが、マウンド上のソロカの姿と恐ろしいほどに重なって見えてしまった。彼はこれまで「2点台の防御率」という分厚い鎧を着ていた。だが、レッズの打者たちはその鎧を、バールで叩き割るのではなく、ピンセットで丁寧に剥がしにきたのだ。
3回のスティーブンソンの犠牲フライ。そして悪夢の4回。スチュワートにタイムリーを浴び、またしてもスティーブンソンに犠牲フライを打たれる。極めつけは二死満塁、マクレーンに対してフルカウントから与えた「押し出しの四球」。この瞬間、ソロカは完全に丸裸にされた。強烈なホームランを浴びるよりも、犠牲フライや四球でじわじわと血を流させられることほど、プライドの高い投手の精神を破壊するものはない。彼の心は折れ、スタジアムは悲鳴すら上げられない深い絶望の静寂に包まれた。
しかし、この完全な崩壊のゲームの中で、私は一人の男の「泥臭い誇り」に心を打たれていた。1番・レフトで出場した、我らがラーズ・ヌートバーである。彼の打率は.221。数字だけを見れば、ファンからの風当たりは強く、結果が欲しくてたまらないはずだ。だが5回裏、1-7と大差をつけられ、誰もが諦めかけていた一死1、3塁の場面。ヌートバーは自分がホームランを打つこと（ヒーローになること）を完全に放棄した。彼は初球から、とにかくランナーを還すことだけを考えて、セカンドへゴロを転がした。自分がアウトになることと引き換えに、確実にもぎ取った1点。スコアは2-7。大勢に影響はないかもしれない。だが、この「自己犠牲」こそが、チームスポーツの神髄である。
後半、完全にタガが外れたレッズの打者たちは、デラクルスやブルデーが遊びのようにポンポンとホームランを放り込み、スコアは11-5にまで膨れ上がった。記録的な大敗。しかし、エースが丸裸にされてすべてを奪われたグラウンドで、ヌートバーが放ったあの地味なセカンドゴロは、間違いなくダイヤモンドバックスの「死に絶えていない魂」の証明だった。ベースボールは美しいだけではない。恥辱にまみれながらも、アウトと引き換えに1点を奪う、そういう泥臭い生存競争の場なのだ。
