一方で、試合のペースを握っていたはずのカブス陣営にも、別の「絶望」が待っていた。野球における「27個目のアウト」は、時に鉛のように重い。4-2とリードして迎えた9回裏。マウンドにはカブスのクローザー、ジェイコブ・ウェブ。2アウトを奪い、ランナーは2塁にいたが、バッターは打率.138で9番に沈むレオナルド・リバスだった。誰もが「ここでゲームセットだ」と安堵の息を吐きかけた。しかし、ウェブは仕留めきれなかった。リバスが意地のタイムリーを放ち、4-3。スコア以上に、この「安全だと思っていた下位打線に打たれた」という精神的ショックは、投手のバランスを崩す。
そして、次に打席に入ったのは、初回に先頭打者アーチを放っているランディ・アロザレーナ。球場全体が地鳴りのような手拍子と歓声に包まれる。ウェブの額に汗が滲むのが見えた。ストライクを取りにいかなければならない、しかし甘く入れば終わる。極限の2球目。アロザレーナのバットが狂暴に空気を切り裂いた瞬間、結果を見届ける必要はなかった。ライトスタンドへ吸い込まれる、逆転のサヨナラ2ランホームラン。たった数分の間に、歓喜の頂点から絶望のどん底へ突き落とされたカブスのベンチの沈黙は、T-モバイル・パークの大熱狂の裏で、あまりにも残酷だった。
ルーキーが味わった洗礼の恐怖、そして、ベテランのクローザーが味わった最後の1アウトの恐怖。5-4というスコアボードの裏には、データや理屈では決して測れない、人間の脆さと底知れぬ強さが、まざまざと描き出されていたのだ。これだから、ベースボールの観戦はやめられない。
