6球目。外角に外れたボール。アンパイアの腕は上がらない。「フォアボール」。ホームランを打たれたわけではない。鮮やかなタイムリーを浴びたわけでもない。ただ、バッターがバットを振らずに、1点が静かにヤンキースに入ったのだ。この「押し出し四球」による失点は、まさに制御不能なガス漏れのようなものだった。大きな音（快音）は出ないが、その場の空気（スタジアムの雰囲気）を完全にぶち壊し、味方の士気を致命的に削ぎ落としてしまう、最も残酷で恥辱的な失点なのだ。
この「見えないガスの暴発」によって、ブルージェイズの精神的な堤防は完全に決壊した。代わったばかりの中継ぎフルーハティが、続くベン・ライスにライトへの2点タイムリーを浴びて一気に2-5。さらに終盤には、チザムの2ラン、そして押し出しを選んだグリシャム自身のダメ押しソロホームランと、ヤンキースの「溜まっていた不満」が爆発するような一発攻勢の前に、ブルージェイズはなす術なく敗れ去ったのだ。
一方で、ブルージェイズの5番に座る岡本和真。彼は今日、ヒットを打てていない。打率.230と苦しんでいる彼もまた、己の中にフラストレーションというガスを溜め込んでいるはずだ。しかし、彼が打席に立つというプレッシャーは、確実に相手投手に「無駄な球」を投げさせている。彼の中の爆発のタイミングがいつ訪れるのか、私たちは固唾を飲んで待っている。
