However, how the numbers are treated and interpreted makes MLB (Major League Baseball) in America and NPB (Nippon Professional Baseball) in Japan, at times, seem like completely different games.
In one dugout, the manager orders a sacrifice bunt with "no outs, runner on first." In the opposing dugout, the manager unhesitatingly puts a powerful hitter with a **.250 average** but a **.400 OBP** in the leadoff spot.
Have you ever wondered why the narrative and the stage setting of a game called "baseball" can be so dramatically different?
This difference is not merely a technical one. It is a reflection of the deep-seated **cultural values and philosophies** towards the entire enterprise of baseball.

What about NPB? While some teams began adopting Sabermetrics concepts in the late 2000s, its integration has been significantly slower than in MLB.

If the goal is victory, adopting the **"optimal solution"** provided by data is logical. Yet, sometimes, MLB baseball strikes me as **"too cold."**
Data views a player as a **"productivity number (WAR)."** Can data empathize with the state of mind of a regular player who is constantly platooned, unable to step into the box every day due to an unfavorable matchup? I doubt it.
In contrast, NPB baseball retains a strong sense of **"Emotional Margin"** and **"Narrative."**
**"Even when he's struggling, I shouldn't remove him from the cleanup spot. It's because I trust him that I expect him to keep hitting."**
This is a decision based on the coach's **"humanity"** and **"compassion,"** which cannot be measured by data. The sense of unity between the dugout and the stands after a successful sacrifice bunt—that is a **sharing of emotion** called **"momentum,"** something that cannot be dismissed merely as a reduction in Run Expectancy.
MLB fans coolly analyze a player's contribution using complex metrics like **FIP (Fielder Independent Pitching)** and **wOBA (Weighted On-Base Average)**. NPB fans, conversely, cry over the **game-winning hit** struck by a struggling **cleanup hitter** in the clutch, seeing a **"story of resurgence"** unfold.
Neither approach is superior. But in cherishing the **subtleties of the human heart** that numbers cannot fully articulate, even while pursuing the truth of those numbers, lies the true **"depth"** of Japanese baseball.
What is the Value of What Numbers Cannot Measure?
Baseball is a game full of contradictions, mixing elements that are predictable with data and those that are absolutely unpredictable.
Sabermetrics points us toward the direction of the **"right choice."** However, a manager's tactical decision to intentionally prioritize traditional **"trust and passion"** over that "right choice" embodies a compelling human drama that transcends mere data.
