It’s not as if the Twins offered no resistance. In the bottom of the 2nd, veteran Victor Caratini launched a game-tying solo home run. For a moment, Target Field erupted in a ground-shaking roar. And in the 3rd, Josh Bell's RBI single tied it up once again. Twins fans must have believed, "We can do this. We can slay this blue giant." But the Baseball Gods reside in the minutiae, and they often present a cold, unyielding lack of synergy to those who stumble. In the top of the 3rd, Edman hit a routine grounder to second. What should have been an inning-ending play induced a fatal throwing error by Luke Keaschall, gifting the Dodgers a run. Giving up a run on an error—that is a highly toxic venom that rots a team's morale from the roots.
Then came the top of the 4th. The ultimate pressure cooked up by the Dodgers' bench came to fruition. Stepping into the box with one out and runners on the corners was number 17, Shohei Ohtani. The very oxygen in the stadium shifted. The Twins' battery must have been operating under extreme duress. But Ohtani didn't force a violent swing here. He perfectly timed the first pitch, lofting a beautifully calculated sacrifice fly to left. One swing. An at-bat that doesn't even count toward his batting average, yet it completely broke the psychological spine of the Twins. The tactical placement of having Ohtani lead off isn't just to get him more plate appearances. The sheer fact that "Ohtani is on base, or Ohtani is driving in a run" violently scrapes away at the opposing pitcher's mentality, forcing them to leave pitches over the heart of the plate for the hitters that follow.
Indeed, immediately following Ohtani's sac fly, the Twins' pitching staff looked like a kite with a snapped string. The #3 hitter, Freddie Freeman, ground out an agonizing 7-pitch at-bat before ripping an RBI single to center, and cleanup man Mookie Betts effortlessly drove the 3rd pitch to center for another run. This artistic synergy orchestrated by a trio of former MVPs. It is akin to a masterful symphony of destruction. Void of emotion, they simply and methodically plunge a cold blade into the opponent's weaknesses.
On the mound, Justin Wrobelski utilized this immense run support to orchestrate an incredibly clever performance. While he scattered hits, he refused to issue unnecessary walks, continually pounding the edges of the strike zone. His 9-2 record is no fluke. He fully understands how to conduct himself as a "winning pitcher," even if he isn't the flashy, overpowering ace. The true horror of the Dodgers organization lies in this absolute dedication to fulfilling one's role.
And then, the final nail in the coffin: the top of the 9th. The brutal theatre of baseball reached its final act. After Alex Call launched the first pitch into the bleachers, the Dodgers' bench ruthlessly sent Miguel Rojas to pinch-hit for Ohtani. The outcome was already decided. Yet, Rojas mercilessly drove an RBI double, Andy Pages immediately followed suit, and Max Muncy delivered the coup de grâce with a 2-run double with the bases loaded. A 5-run explosion. 12 to 2. The numbers etched on the scoreboard carried a weight far heavier than mere runs. "We do not ease up. We will keep punching until you stop breathing." That is the philosophy of the apex predator.
The solo home run hit by Brooks Lee in the bottom of the 9th was like the faint strike of a match in absolute darkness. But in the end, it was merely a melancholic flash that only served to illuminate the overwhelming, unapproachable power of the Dodgers.
17 hits. 12 runs. Today, at Target Field, the Dodgers vividly demonstrated to the fans just how unreasonable this game can be, governed by an overpowering kinetic force. Individual talents bound together by flawless tactical placement, generating an unstoppable momentum, and crushing the enemy with terrifying, clockwork synergy. As baseball fanatics, faced with this undeniable proof of blue blood, we are left speechless, able only to intoxicate ourselves in its beautiful brutality.
