The bottom of the order gets on base, and the top of the order drives them in. Lurking deeply behind this ideal cycle is the "invisible power" of Seiya Suzuki, who sits in the #4 spot for the Cubs. Suzuki boasts a stable .269 batting average and possesses the ability to hit for extra bases to all fields. Opposing batteries are terrified of accumulating runners in front of middle-of-the-order hitters like Suzuki and Michael Busch. Consequently, the heavy pressure of "absolutely having to get outs against the bottom of the lineup" weighs heavily on the pitcher, ironically causing them to overthrow and induce walks or leave pitches over the plate. Even if no resounding crack echoes from Seiya Suzuki's bat, the mere fact that he is "positioned" at cleanup serves as a powerful weapon that grinds down the opposing pitcher's psyche. This is precisely the profound tactical nature of modern baseball.
On the other hand, the Mets did not simply sit in silence and get trampled. Francisco Alvarez, the #9 hitting catcher who formed the battery with Senga, displayed tremendous tenacity at the plate while desperately trying to guide his struggling ace in a foreign land. He hit a 2-run single to center with bases loaded and two outs in the bottom of the 2nd, and launched a retaliatory 6th solo home run in the 7th. Playing the most grueling position on the field, his attitude of continuously inspiring the team with his bat was one of the very few rays of hope for the Mets under dark, gathering clouds.
Then, the game entered the bottom of the 9th. The score was 3-9. In a situation reeking of defeat, the Mets' lineup showed their pride. Leadoff hitter Carson Benge hit an RBI single to right, and the ensuing batter, Bo Bichette, smashed a defiant 9th home run (a 2-run shot) into the left-field stands. The score suddenly became 6-9. The fans at Citi Field rose to their feet, screaming themselves hoarse, believing in a miraculous grand comeback. This fierce late pursuit proves the inherently high potential possessed by the Mets organization. However, at the same time, it was a scene that painfully hammered home the difficulty of "flow" in the sport of baseball, forcing us to ask, "Why couldn't they produce this connectivity early in the game?" The overly heavy cross of the 5 runs surrendered in the 2nd inning acted as shackles on their feet until the very end.
The game came to a close with the Cubs successfully escaping. It is rare to see a game where the contrast between the victor and the vanquished is so distinctly drawn. The Cubs perfectly executed an offensive "line" as the ambushers known as the bottom of the order functioned magnificently. In contrast, the Mets' overall "synchronization" collapsed stemming from the fraying thread of their ace's struggles, limiting them to counterattacks born solely out of individual pride.
Kodai Senga's ERA of 9.00. This number does not mean he is finished. It is proof that the world's highest stage, Major League Baseball, is fiercely demanding a "new evolution" from him. How will he reclaim the quality and command of his fastball, the very foundation of pitching, rather than relying on the phantom of the Ghost Fork? And how will he induce a paradigm shift in his pitch sequencing? The baseball gods do not assign trials that cannot be overcome. I believe that his back, walking off the mound while blown by the cold New York wind, is merely the prologue to a dramatic bounce-back in his next start. For the story of baseball shines most beautifully at the exact moment one crawls up from rock bottom.
