It was the moment the breakwater of zeroes, built up over 8 innings, was shattered by the hands of a former hero—a moment far too dramatic and incredibly cruel.
This "marvel of positioning" is the true strength of the D-backs. They have the luxury of placing a hitter with the track record, experience, and above all, the "instinct for crucial moments" like Arenado in the #6 hole. The following batter, Blaze Jordan, lifted a sacrifice fly to right. 2-4. They were slowly, steadily narrowing the gap. The lineup began to connect as if it had been resuscitated.
And then, with a runner on third and two outs. Stepping into the batter's box was the #9 hitter, J. Crooks, who had committed the painful passed ball just moments prior. Imagine his state of mind. His own mistake had inflicted fatal damage on his team. That pressure would have been more than enough to make the young catcher's knees tremble. Yet, through sheer tenacity, he drove the 4th pitch from D-backs closer B. Garcia into shallow right field. 3-4. Unbelievably, it was a one-run game. A gritty, yet supremely beautiful hit of self-redemption, making up for his own mistake with his own bat. Busch Stadium was enveloped in the loudest, earth-shattering roar of the day.
The game ultimately concluded with the next batter being retired, resulting in a 3-4 loss for the Cardinals. However, this 2-hour and 52-minute drama was far too dense to be dismissed as a simple "single loss." The extreme string of zeroes that lasted through the 8th inning. The immense pressure and silence borne by cleanup hitter Nootbaar. The ruthless blow delivered by former hero Arenado to his old team. And the ferocious counterattack in the bottom of the 9th trying to claw back from the abyss of despair. All these elements intertwined like a complex tapestry to construct a single game. We baseball fans flock to the stadium to witness the terror of this "flow" and the chaos brought about by the "marvel of positioning." Behind the contrast between the victor and the vanquished, there is always a drama of living, breathing human beings hidden away. The cheers and sighs that faded into the night sky over Busch Stadium are nothing more than a prologue to a new story for tomorrow.
