4-4の同点で迎えた無死1塁の場面。スタジアムの空気は完全に硬直していた。タイガースのリリーフ、ホルトンは、打席に立つ村上の放つ「打てばすべてが終わる」という圧倒的な威圧感（重力）に、明らかに息を呑んでいた。追い込まれながらも、村上は冷静に獲物を待っていた。そして3球目。ほんのわずかに甘く入ったボールを、村上は容赦なく粉砕した。乾いた、破裂するような打球音がデトロイトの空に響き渡る。ライトスタンドの奥深くへ叩き込まれた、今季第28号の逆転2ランホームラン。タイガースが序盤に見せた奇襲の魔法を、たった一振りで無残に打ち砕き、自分たちの支配下へと引きずり戻したのだ。
最終回にミゲル・バルガスが同じく28号のダメ押し弾を放ち、7-5でゲームセット。タイガースの初球攻撃という荒々しい戦術は美しかったが、村上やバルガスという「本物の長打力」の前に、そのシナリオは無残に書き換えられてしまった。無謀なダイブも素晴らしいが、最後にグラウンドを支配するのは、圧倒的な実績とパワーを持つ「本物の主砲」なのだと、村上のあの一振りが雄弁に物語っていた。
