しかし、チームとは不思議な生き物である。絶対的な存在が崩れ落ちた時、残された者たちは狂ったような底力を発揮することがある。1-7という絶望的なスコアの中で、ブルージェイズの打者たちはバットを短く持ち、反撃の炎を燃やし始めた。5回表、カークが、マカドゥーが、ルークスが食らいつく。
そして二死1,2塁という痺れる場面で、我らが日本の大砲、岡本和真が打席に入った。彼はこの日「4番」を任されていた。打率は.227。彼もまた、メジャーの舞台で常に厳しい「査定」を受け続けている男だ。一発を狙って三振に倒れれば、ファンからのブーイングが待ち受けているだろう。しかし岡本は、自分勝手なスイングをしなかった。チームが今求めている「1点」のために、コンパクトに、そして正確にレフト前へとボールを弾き返したのだ。タイムリーヒット。彼が繋いだその線は、チームに「俺たちはまだ終わっていない」という強烈なメッセージを与えた。
