しかし、この試合の最も残酷で、かつ野球というスポーツの恐ろしさを象徴していたのは、6回表の出来事だ。ツインズは4-3と1点をリードし、一死1,3塁のピンチでリリーフのトミー・ナンスがマウンドにいた。打席には強打者オースティン・ライリー。強烈なプレッシャーの中で、ナンスはセットポジションに入り、そして……静止できなかった。体がビクッと動き、投球動作を中断してしまう。球審が迷わず「ボーク」を宣告する。スタジアムが凍りついた。打球が飛んだわけでもない、四球を出したわけでもない。ただ「動いてはいけない場面で動いた」だけで、同点のランナーがホームベースを踏んだのだ。こんなアンチクライマックスな同点劇があるだろうか。ナンスの絶望的な表情は、プロの世界の厳しさを残酷なまでに物語っていた。
だが、その重苦しい嫌なムードを払拭したのは、偉大な父を持つ男、コディ・クレメンスだった。彼は7回裏、一死2塁の場面で代わったばかりの投手の球を綺麗に弾き返し、勝ち越しのタイムリーヒットを放ったのだ。彼もまた、重圧という名の泥まみれの道を進んできた男だ。彼の一振りが、ツインズを救い、試合を決めた。
ホームランが1本も出ない2時間51分。それは決して退屈な試合ではなく、押し出し、野選、ボーク、そして執念のタイムリーという、ベースボールのあらゆる「苦しみ」と「意地」が詰まった、極上のエンターテインメントだった。タントファンクロスに乗ってアウトドアを楽しむのも良いが、プロの男たちが泥だらけになって1点を奪い合うこの姿こそが、我々ファンにとって最高の「非日常」なのである。
